Violence: The facts

There is no getting away from the simple fact that everybody who gets involved in gangs or violent crime risks ruining their own life, the lives of their families, the lives of their victims, the families of the victims - and their community.

Carrying a knife means you are likely to use it at some point, which brings the physical risks of scars, permanent injuries, disability - or death - into play.

There's also the emotional turmoil for your family and the victim's relatives. They may have to visit a loved one in hospital ... or could find themselves laying flowers on a grave.

Even if there are no physical injuries involved, the consequences of violent crime can be devastating. Just carrying a knife on the streets could land you in court and in jail.

A criminal record has long-term effects on your chances of getting a job, as well as the way you are viewed in the community.
